Ugh. People being mean on the internet is so lame. I think what you’re doing is incredibly cool! (But I’m just another stranger on the internet whose opinion you shouldn’t really care about. 😉)
Decades ago, I made video game content on YouTube. I created top 10 lists of my beloved Legend of Zelda characters. A few of my videos went viral. What started out as a cool community of Zelda gamers, became vitriol spewed by keyboard warriors. Once they discovered I was a woman they upped the ante. I think the fact that you got a reaction deserves applause. It means you’re doing something worthwhile. Thanks for the helpful tips!!
And so sorry about the YouTube trolls. I hope you took that community elsewhere. Although I don't know if there is a safe place on the internet really. Substack is pretty nice.
Tanya, such wise words - thank you so much for sharing how you deal with such madness. Some people are extraordinary in their behaviour towards others, aren't they? Oh, and what you're doing is amazing! 🙌
What in the heck is wrong with people?!?! Internet trolls. Ugh. I hope the comments you have received here on Substack have been more encouraging and welcoming of your amazing idea.
I once posted a link to a short story on Reddit. "WhY not JuSt PoSt the whole th1ng in the post? Not gonna go to your stupid page" was the mod's response. Fun community they have there indeed!
So sorry they came after you. FWIW I have the same impulse you have. I'd gladly do one language a month for a year, but I know I couldn't keep it up. (I have some old languages that I've mostly forgotten. French which I can read but not understand conversation. And Vietnamese which I can not longer even read. I haven't spoken in 50 (!) years, and I once used it on a daily basis, even talking to strangers.) My current language is Dutch. I'm trying to leverage my English and German to make it go faster and it's mostly working.
I wonder where those forgotten languages go. I thought I'd completely forgotten Sanskrit, but after I started learning the Thai script I realized I completely remember Devanagari as well (they have some similarities). I'm sure I have forgotten most of the vocabulary, but I have a feeling that if I tried to revive my knowledge of the grammar it would come back quickly, it wouldn't be like learning it from scratch.

Thank you, Marika 💜 I think it's probably ok to care about the opinions of *some* strangers on the internet 😉

I'm sorry that happened to you, Kate. Also, I'm going to follow you now because I like your last name.
Thank you, Chris!! Likewise :)
I met more good 🍎 /Zelda fans than bad, so overall it was a great learning experience.
I just love the way you write.
You write as if you're talking to a friend (or yourself). As in, the reader either gets it or doesn't get it.
I get it.
The internet is a weird place and it seems people only know how to be their worse selves on it.
Thank you, Victoria 💜 The internet is a weird place but this comment section is hands down the place on the web.
Tanya, there are people in places of the world that you have never heard of who support you and wish you well. Never forget that.
(12 languages in 12 months is a terrific project. Good luck❣️)
Thank you, Louise 💜 It means a lot :)
It's crazy that people would attack you for what you posted. Even on Reddit. I'm glad you could spin it into something positive.
Yeah, the internet is a truly strange place.

Thank you Rebecca 💜

People have been truly wonderful here. But OF COURSE our brains our masochistic or something and they tend to focus on the negative when it happens.

Yeah Reddit is a very special place that way. If the rest of the internet is sort of passive-agressive, Reddit is just agressive.

So good!
